India Begins Commercial Semiconductor Production

The update

Pilot production started at three plants in 2025, and the first commercial project was inaugurated on 28 February 2026, with Micron's assembly, test, marking and packaging facility in Sanand, Gujarat leading the move to production. MeitY secretary S Krishnan said five to six projects could be in commercial production by the end of 2026.

The Union Cabinet has also approved the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission, with a focus on domestic chip design.

Why it matters

A domestic chip ecosystem strengthens supply chains for electronics, automotive and IoT products, and creates demand for embedded and design software skills.
