Platform Engineering in 2026: Golden Paths That Developers Actually Use

From DevOps to platforms

Gartner's 2023 forecast said that by 2026, 80% of large software engineering organisations would establish platform engineering teams, up from 45% in 2022, acting as internal providers of reusable services, components and tools.

The idea is simple: instead of every team assembling its own pipelines and infrastructure, a platform team offers paved roads that make the right way the easy way.

What a useful platform includes

Service templates with CI/CD, observability and security scanning built in; self-service environments; a catalogue showing who owns what; and scorecards that show which services meet standards.

Start with the most common path, such as a new API service, and make it work end to end before adding more.

Measuring success

Track adoption, time from idea to first deployment, change failure rate and developer satisfaction. If teams avoid the platform, treat that as user research, not disobedience.

Smaller organisations can get most of the benefit with a few well-maintained templates and shared pipelines rather than a dedicated team.
